MyIT CRM : MyIT CRM's Future - A total rewrite in Ruby/Rails!

Added by geevpc about 1 month ago

MyIT CRM as been steadily developed of the 18 months since it's started.
Built from the Open Source Cite CRM version which was a great starting point at the time, it has become quite difficult to add all those features which you the users have requested.

It has been decided by the team that we will begin rewriting MyIT CRM from the ground up, and this time using Ruby and Rails programming language.
Now before you ask, MyIT CRM (php/current version) will continue to be developed and bugs resolved, and of course the odd feature thrown in as well, so you will be able to get updates and releases still for your current installs.

MyIT CRM (the Ruby version), has already begun development.
With all the features that you users have already requested are being planned for in advance in this rewrite.

Some quick Question/Answers:
Q: Why not just recode the current MyIT CRM php version?
A: The amount of time, I believe it would take to do this, would out-way the benefits that would be gained from a ground up rewrite.

Q: Why change the programming language from PHP to Ruby/Rails?
A: The whole php and mysql language to me was and still is a little daunting. Ruby language is more “human” like in it’s language and requires less double up in coding. Eg: Currently, to create a page in html and/or php code to show it to the user, then to manipulate the data using php and database queries.
In Ruby, the language generates this for you with minimal input. If interested check out http://railscasts.com for fantastic video podcasts and you soon get the picture.

Q: What about all my current data that is stored in the current MyIT CRM?
A: We will develop an export/ import process to import all your clients, invoices, labour rates, etc into the Ruby version so you hit the ground running!

I personally have been using/writing in ruby for last few weeks and am loving it. Sick I know, but compared to PHP it makes more sense to me.
I will be focusing my efforts on the rewrite whilst our other devs will continue on the php version in the interim until we have a comparable ruby version.

Added by geevpc about 1 month ago

Unfortunately, The upgrade process is broken in v0.2.9.0.

Symptoms:
  1. Certian sections display Database errors when saving data.
  2. Upgrade script doesn't through errors and if errors are thrown then the upgrade process is corruted and will potentially throw more errors upon running the upgrade process again.

We have reported the issue here #137 and a working on a fix.

NOTE: Fresh installs are not affected only upgrading from 0.2.8.x to 0.2.9.0

MyIT CRM : We need your input. Do you use Authourize.NET in MyIT CRM?

Added by geevpc 5 months ago

Hi All, I want to put to the community the question if Authorize.NET is used in MyIT CRM?

With the various payment methods used in MyIT CRM is it still a valid option?
The reason I am asking this is that should we spend time to develop it further or simply remove it.

Please take the time to answer the Poll and we will base our future development on the results.

PS: I have also had no issues or forum posts reported to us regarding this feature, hence why I am asking this question..

I would like to thank those of you who have been emailing me in regards to when the next release will be and I thankyou for your positive comments about the software.
It is is regret that we will be delaying the release by a few weeks. This will hopefully give us enough time to finish off the all the issues and features that you all have provided. It's been a huge task but an enjoyable one for the team.
We are currently ~80% complete with some final touches being put into place, then comes the testing process.

We will continue to work hard and have some fun along the way.

If you want to help out we need your help on creating the Wiki pages required to help out current and new users.

MyIT CRM : Going LIVE!

Added by geevpc 9 months ago

The team at MyIT CRM would like to announce the opening to the public of our new website for the development and hosting of the MyIT CRM software.
Why did we change and what are the changes?
Well we used to run seperate software like wordpress, trac and phpbb for the forum. We wanted to get intergration between them all but this would was not possible without major hacks and upgrades. We searched around for suitable solutions and we decided to move to redmine. Redmine is like TRAC but it has a built-in forum and bug tracker as well as wiki and file control. It also has capacity to create plugins (sub projects) that we will incorperate in the coming months.
Redmine is a powerful program and is suited to what we required for further development and user intergration of MyIT CRM.

As of the 14/12/2009 we have gone live with this site and the old TRAC, wordpress sites have been shutdown. The old forum site will remain in place but posting and new user registraions will be stopped.

We encourage that all prevoius users register with this site to stay up-to-date with the latest news and releases as well as post new bugs and participate in the ongoing development of our software.

From the team at MyIT CRM we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year and look forward to developing/chatting with you!

MyIT CRM : [UPDATE] New Project Site

Added by geevpc 9 months ago

We have now all but completed the migration over to redmine. There are a few more things to go before we go live but we anticipate that this will be sooner then the proposed 21/12/09 date.
For the interim, we will continue to use svn but we have migrated this to google's code storage. The reason behind this was that sourceforge svn was slow and the current svn storage had to be removed. We had an account with google so this was the obvious choice and is faster then sourceforges servers. We al investigated using git but time was not on our side and there were still some little issues that we could not get resolved from our IDE interface. We will continue to work towards using git in the future but until then, svn is the second choice.
